Songwriter Rounds
Half the songs you know by heart were written by someone who never got famous singing them. A songwriter round puts that person on stage instead, taking turns with two or three others, each playing their own songs. The Bluebird Cafe made the format famous and still books it nightly in a room the size of a living room. The Listening Room Cafe pairs the format with food brought right to your stage-side table, and 3rd & Lindsley runs writer nights alongside its bigger touring calendar. Smaller rooms keep the tradition going too, Bobby's Idle Hour on Music Row, The Local in West End, and Live Oak's weekly rounds among them.
Honky Tonks
The honky-tonks on Broadway run on cover bands and overpriced buckets of beer for the tourist crowd. The Nashville Palace has slung fried bologna sandwiches and country bands since 1977, just steps from the Grand Ole Opry House. Skinny Dennis brought a Brooklyn transplant's take on the two-step to East Nashville. Losers Bar and Riley Green's Duck Blind sit next door to each other in Midtown, same owners, same music-industry crowd inside, and Doc Holliday's keeps the noise going just a block off the strip.
Concert Venues
Nashville's national touring acts need a stage big enough to match their production. The Ryman, the Mother Church of Country Music, hosts national artists across every genre almost year-round. The Pinnacle anchors Nashville Yards with a 4,500-capacity room built for arena-level sound, and Marathon Music Works turns a converted early-1900s auto factory into one of the best mid-size stages in the South. Brooklyn Bowl pairs touring acts with nineteen lanes of bowling, and Ascend Amphitheater puts a summer show right on the river with the skyline behind the stage.
